Why GSM Alone Cannot Define the Right Fusing Cloth

GSM is one of the most visible specifications when buyers compare interlining, but it should not be the only deciding factor. GSM measures weight per square metre; it does not fully describe the base construction, adhesive coating, flexibility or finished hand feel. Two fusing cloth products with similar GSM can behave differently after pressing, which is why application and sampling remain important.

For a structured suit or blazer, a manufacturer may need stable support across the front body, chest or lapel. A woven fusible interlining can be considered for these areas, with the exact weight selected according to the outer fabric and desired structure. Body fusing may require a different grade from a collar or cuff. Choosing a heavier product simply because the garment needs more support can create an overly firm result if the outer material is already substantial.

Soft garments show why weight needs context. Lightweight or flowing fabrics can lose their natural drape when paired with an unnecessarily heavy interlining. A targeted application using a lighter woven or non-woven grade may provide sufficient reinforcement while keeping the garment flexible. Plackets, waistbands, pockets and necklines often illustrate this principle: support is required, but full-panel stiffness may not be desirable. This method is useful for both new styles and repeat production, where consistency matters across multiple batches.

A practical selection process combines several checks. Start with the garment structure, then assess the outer fabric, required support, desired drape and hand feel. Shortlist the construction and GSM range, review the coating and application instructions, and finally make a sample with the actual fabric. Buyers should inspect bond strength, surface appearance, flexibility and feel after fusing. For wholesale purchasing, requesting clear specifications from suppliers also makes comparisons easier. Treat GSM as one useful data point rather than a complete definition of performance, and the final interlining choice becomes much more application-focused.
