Planning Interlining Requirements for a Production Run

 

Interlining requirements can become difficult to manage when a production order includes several garment styles. A single collection may contain sherwanis, suits, blazers and lighter ethnic garments, each requiring different levels of support. Instead of ordering one product for the entire collection, manufacturers should break the requirement down by garment and application. Start by identifying the areas that need reinforcement and estimate the quantity required for each. This makes it easier to decide whether woven or non-woven interlining fabric is appropriate and reduces the possibility of buying excess material that will not suit another style.

The next step is to create a clear specification for every requirement. Record the construction, GSM, coating, colour, width and roll length for each product. For example, a heavy woven grade may be assigned to sherwani fronts, while a lighter grade is reserved for collars, cuffs or plackets. The cutting plan should also be considered because roll width affects material utilisation. Ordering based only on total metres without checking how the material will be cut can result in avoidable waste. Manufacturers should also consider minimum order quantities when several different grades are needed within the same production cycle.

Before confirming the final order, test each selected fusing cloth against the relevant outer fabric. Once the production team approves the samples, quantities can be calculated with greater confidence. It is also worth discussing repeat availability with the supplier, especially when the same styles will be produced across multiple seasons. Consistent supply matters because changing the reinforcement halfway through a production cycle can alter the garment's hand-feel and structure. A well-planned sourcing process therefore covers more than the initial purchase. It creates a clear specification that can be repeated whenever the same garment style returns to production.
